Wastewater Recyling an Option for Alameda
In a week that saw the East Bay Municipal Utility District Board of Directors vote to implement water rationing, the Wall Street Journal published a story about Southern California cities treating wastewater with reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light and ultimately returning it back - over time - to the drinking water supply.
Action Alameda encouraged the exploration of greywater recycling in our whitepaper for greening Alameda Point. Southern California is already going beyond treating "greywater" for re-use in irrigation to treating full-fledged wastewater. A wastewater treatment facility like this would be an excellent re-use of the light industrial buildings at Alameda Point and help address the coming water crisis. Our civic leaders should be looking into state and county partnerships to develop such a facility at Alameda Point.
