Alameda Citizens Still Protest Measure WW Funds Usage

By Erica Madison

At Nov. 17, 2009, several Alameda citizens requested that the city council, reconsider it’s decision to give tax payer money to Girls and Boys Club.

“Measure WW and the publicity requesting the voters to pass Measure WW, never stated that tax monies could be used to build a privately owned Club house. The City of Alameda has a responsibility to protect the integrity of the vote for Measure WW funds to be spent for public parks and public recreation facilities”, said Alameda citizen Dorothy Freeman.

Other citizens said the Measure WW funds should be used to keep Alameda parks available for everyone and not just children.

A welcomed alternative use for the Measure WW Funds is the acquisition and development of Estuary Park. Several letters signed by Alameda Citizens was placed on file with the city council, requesting that the Measure WW funds should go to Estuary Park.

Funding the Estuary Park project, would make the space available to Alameda Citizens and guests, because the park would stretch from Oakland’s Union Point Park to Alameda’s Gateway entrance.
